A suitable site has been found on the brewery site in Hengelo for the construction of Tiny Houses. Hengelo is thus among the first municipalities in the eastern Netherlands to realise a Tiny House project.
Tiny Houses and its philosophy
Tiny houses are small sustainable homes of up to 50m2. The design and construction make smart use of space and innovative technologies. The Tiny House Movement is a philosophy that stands for environmental friendliness, sustainability and awareness. They ask questions like, how much is really needed to live nicely? When are we satisfied? How can we live more consciously? They find much of the answer in Tiny Houses. "The Tiny Housing movement is about a different way of living. It is about being conscious of space, of materials, of energy. And about mutual solidarity and the sharing economy" according to Jan Willem Aardema of Bouwschool Twente.
The Tiny House project
There is room for 10 cottages and the enthusiasm is already double. Twenty people have already signed up, six of whom are already busy concretising their plans. The project fits in perfectly with our city's housing vision, says Hengelo alderman Marcel Elferink. Hengelo wants to respond to the housing needs of the future and offer room for experimental forms of living. Landowner Ter Stege Vastgoed from Rijssen is making the land of the brewery site available free of charge for the Tiny House project. After five years, Ter Stege itself will build on the land and the residents will have to move out. Bert Hallink, director of Ter Steege real estate: "We have plans for that land, but it will be a few years before we implement them. And we are curious though. This is an innovative project so they are going to build differently, use different products, invent new things. We find that very interesting, so we are happy to contribute." The initiators of Stichting Tiny Housing Twente have already indicated that they do not find this a problem as the houses will be built in such a way that they can easily be moved.
