The concept of Tiny House originated in America. Meanwhile, the concept is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands too. Not only as sleeping accommodation, but also as affordable and sustainable housing. A young entrepreneurial group from Utrecht immediately grabbed the potential of Tiny Houses with both hands by buying 30 Tiny Houses from a factory in Eastern Europe. The first 4 Tiny Houses were delivered last week and are on display in Drenthe. We talk to Jochem Verheul one of the entrepreneurs with the biggest question being 'what are their plans with 30 Tiny Houses? Our love for Tiny Houses originated in late 2019 from tinyparks.nl, through which we have been creating small-scale and intimate camping locations in the Netherlands with Tiny Houses for a year now. At TinyParks, guests can book a special overnight stay in a Tiny House. For this concept, we visited numerous Tiny House builders in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and China, looking for the supplier who could build the best Tiny Houses for us. So we finally found this one in Eastern Europe. Soon we received requests from friends, campsites and even a property developer to buy our Tiny Houses. The high-quality finish, competitive prices and unique design set us apart from all other suppliers in the Netherlands. So it was a logical and small step for us to also set up a company where people can buy our Tiny Houses. We have been doing this for several months now via TINY.nl. We have three different models we offer here. All models are still customisable according to your wishes, think kitchen colour, bathroom type, floor, etc. Prices range from €35,000 euros to €50,000 euros.
What makes spending the night in a Tiny House different from a Safari tent or Yurt?
Our Tiny Houses are built on a trailer but have the luxury of a hotel room. For example, all tiny houses have private bathrooms, full kitchens and beautiful sleeping fides with sky views. So for guests looking for just a little more comfort with the ambience of a campsite, our Tiny Houses are truly a solution.
You have bought 30 Tiny Houses this year, will it stop there?
Haha no we hope not Jochem laughs. Our goal is to have more than 250 Tiny Houses in recreational rentals in the Netherlands within five years and to sell about 20 of them annually through TINY.nl as well.
Tiny Houses as recreational homes we understand but do people really want to live permanently in a Tiny House?
Sure, this group is not very large at the moment but within every municipality you can see applications emerging from people striving for a more minimalist existence. I expect that within 10 years, every municipality will start providing a place for this group. What is fair, is fair, we as humans could do with a bit less and all of us think a bit more about the earth.
What do you think is the strong point of your Tiny House or Tiny Houses?
I personally really like the fact that we as a company have chosen to always build the Tiny House on a trailer as Tiny Houses were originally intended. A choice that we know is not always ideal but we still stand 100% behind as a group.
What is the supporting structure made of and how are the finishes and insulation applied?
All Tiny Houses are built with sustainably certified timber from Sweden "timber frame construction". In terms of insulation, customers have the choice of standard insulation or natural sheep's wool. We ourselves chose sheep's wool when we first ordered 30 Tiny Houses. The insulation value of the Tiny Houses is higher than required by the building code in the Netherlands. In Romania, where the factory is located, it can regularly reach -20 in winter. So they know better than anyone how important it is to be warm at all times 😊.
How many Tiny Houses do you import per year?
With current capacity, we can deliver 6 Tiny Houses every month throughout the Netherlands. We take care of transport, adjustment and connection of the Tiny House on location. This completely relieves the client of any worries. The client also does not have to worry about anything for the first 5 years, because all Tiny Houses we deliver come with a 5-year warranty certificate on everything. This is unique in the Netherlands.
Where can your Tiny Houses be admired?
We now have two models in Drenthe that interested parties can view by appointment. We are also building an indoor showroom location near Utrecht. Here, all three models will be indoors and we can discuss the options of floors, cupboards, kitchen and wood types directly with the customer without being dependent on the weather.
